Whether you have been in Westbury-on-Trym Parish church once for a baptism, wedding or funeral, or you attend services every week you will have heard the organ.Sunday by Sunday, it is regularly heard accompanying hymns, songs and anthems, as well as a solo instrument. It can create a calm and meditative atmosphere before a service; it signals the entrance of the bride and the exit of the happy couple at a wedding; it can provide reflective music to remember a loved one at a funeral.
Restoration work is now required to secure the future of the instrument. We will:
• Update the organ, particularly the electrical wiring and some aspects of the mechanism.
• Improve the organ by repairing worn out components, enhancing the physical layout, making small alterations to some pipes, adding a new solo stop and replacing the noisy action.
• Invest for the future by redesigning the organ console to increase the value and lifespan of the instrument, and ensuring its existence for generations to come.
The work will be done by the internationally respected firm of J W Walker & Sons Ltd. The cost to do this is £100,000. The current total stands at just over £48,500.
We aim to raise this money over two years so that the restoration on the organ can begin in January 2010. You can help by making a donation, supporting the fundraising events and keeping the Appeal in your thoughts and prayers as we take this next step on the church's journey.
